Acne is the most common of skin diseases affecting 85% of Australian's aged between 15-24 years, with 15% of Australian women aged over 24 years having acne. Adult acne is not the same as acne that affects teengers. Younger skin is oily and less sensitive, whereas adult acne is drier and more fragile. Therefore, it makes sense to have a different routine to combating adult acne.acne_skin.jpg

Acne happens when the oil glands (pores) in the skin become blocked. Oil production starts with the hormones, which cause excess oil production in the pore, and if the oil cannot get out, along with a buildup of dead skin cells in the pore lining, a blockage is formed and eventually a blocked pore. A specific type of bacteria that exists in the pore thrives on the oil and dead skin cells, and as a result causes the skin to become inflamed. This inflammation results in a pimple.

For optimal results when fighting blemishes and acne, the following three steps should be followed:

1. Reduce oil to eliminate the environment that acne-causing bacteria thrive in
2. Exfoliate the skin's surface and within the pore to improve the shape and function of the pore
3. Disinfect the skin to eliminate acne-causing bacteria

Because there isn't one routine that works for everyone, finding the combination that works for you is the goal, and that requires experimentation. Here is a step-by-step guide to fighting acne and the products that have been proven to help.

Cleansing

Cleanse skin twice a day with a gentle water-soluble cleanser that is soap free and is acid and/or PH balanced and free of abrasives and alcohol. There is a very common misconception that a cooling or tingling sensation means that a product is working. That tingling sensation is actually skin irritation. It is vital to avoid products that produce that sensation as they can actually harm the skin's healing process, making acne scarring worse and also encouraging pimple-causing bacteria. The first step in fighting acne is thus finding a good gentle, water-soluble cleanser.

Exfoliating

For effective exfoliation, use a 1%-2% Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) product. If you are allergic to BHA's then Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) is your next option to consider. BHA is preferred over AHA for all forms of breakouts and acneas BHA is able to cut through the oil inside pores. However, AHA's are still very effective at exfoliating the skin.

Topical Disinfecting

For someone who struggles with blemishes, a topical disinfectant is a fundamental way to effectively treat this skin condition. Killing the acne-causing bacteria present in pores can be of great help to those suffering from varying types of acne. Benzoyl Peroxide is considered as the most effective choice for a topical disinfectant to fight acne. Benzoyl Peroxide is able to penetrate into the hair follicle and reach the acne-causing bacteria and kill it. Tea Tree Oil is also an effective disinfectant.

Absorbing Excess Oil

Because oil production is triggered by hormones, there is nothing you can apply topically to stop them from making more oil. What you can do is not make matters worse by avoiding products that contain oils or emollient products. To absorb oil, you can also use a clay mask. How often to use a mask depends on your skin type, some use it every day; others, once a week. Here are some great enhancement products for keeping the excess oil at bay.

Makeup For Acne Prone Skin

Find a concealer that is oil free, and that contains acne fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide. For more apparent blemishes, find an oil-free medium coverage foundation. This will help to camouflage large problem areas, and tone down redness caused by the inflammation of the acne. And always set with an oil-free loose powder. It is also important that you always make sure to wash your make-up brushes and applicators frequently.
